How to write a simple application for teaching job to get an interview call
I have been into teaching business for years, and I am receiving many applications for my coaching classes every month.
I have noticed that most new teachers consider the application as a resume or bio-data, which is incorrect.
The resume is completely different from the application.
Application is similar to a cover letter of the bio-data or resume.
A resume is always attached to an application, whereas an application may not always have bio-data. However, attaching bio-data with an application for the teaching job is highly recommended.
Difference between resume and application
An application letter contains your basic information in a short and crisp manner, whereas a resume will have detailed information about your qualifications, experience, accomplishments etc.
I have included a sample application for teaching job in English in this article, but I request you to please read and understand the critical points that I am going to share with you now.
Because as I have told you earlier, I have received thousands of teaching job applications, and I know why a specific type of application has impressed me and forced me to call that candidate for an interview.
If you skip these important points, the chance of getting an interview call for a teaching job might be lesser than your expectation.
Alright?
Now, let us understand how an application for a teaching job is situation-dependent.
You read an advertisement for a teaching post in the newspaper published by any school, coaching class, or recruitment agency.
That is the first situation.
Sometimes, you apply directly for a teaching job without any advertisement. In this situation, there is no vacancy declared or published by the school or tuition classes, but you want to get a job.
Another situation can be a reference from someone to the school or coaching classes.
Right?
Now I will explain all the above situations and how to write an impressive, short and simple application for teaching job in a school or institute.
Situation 1: Application as a response to a teaching job advertisement by a school or institute
The majority of all teaching job applications fall under this situation.
The first thing you should do is to read the advertisement carefully and note down all the requirements mentioned in the job.
After that, compare your qualifications with the requirements, and if you meet all the criteria, you can directly include and mention your suitability in two ways.
You can include the meeting criteria in the teaching job application in between the subject line or reference line just after the salutation.
Example:
To,
The Principal
ABC School, Malad (East)
Ref: Primary teacher – advertised in times of India dated ( mention date)
Dear Sir/Madam,
Another way to include your meeting criteria is in the first paragraph of your teaching job application.
Example:
Your advertisement dated (mention date) for the position of teacher post perfectly matches my experience and qualifications. I am submitting my candidature for this exciting position.
Why do you need to include your match in the teaching job application?
It is because whoever is reading your application, the first thing they try to notice is the suitability of the candidate to their requirement.
And, as soon as they find your suitability, they will read your application further.
Suppose you don’t mention your suitability at the beginning of your teaching job application letter. In that case, they will not be interested to read further because they don’t have time to read the whole application and figure out whether you are a good fit for them or not.
Clear?
We are moving to the second situation.
Situation 2: Direct application for a teaching job without any public advertisement
This situation comes in every teacher’s life when they send an application for a teaching job without vacancy. It is known as cold application.
If you know there is no vacancy in a school or educational institute and still want to send a simple application for a teaching job, you should take care of the following things in your application.
As there is no advertisement, you don’t know anything about the vacant positions and the best candidate for the post.
You have to mention yourself in more detail than in situation number 1. Also, you have to mention for what position you are applying.
It is pretty challenging to predict the appropriateness of your qualifications and experience when you do not know about the vacancy for a teaching job.
However, if your teaching job application is impressive, you will be on their list even if they do not have a vacancy at that time.
Always include a career objectives along with your experience if you have one. ( Experience can be home tuition or a private teaching job.)
So, write your application carefully and showcase your best in the teaching application.
Situation 3: Application for a teaching job when someone refers you to the school, tuition classes or coaching classes
When using your friend’s or relatives’ reference, never forget to mention the reference at the beginning of your application.
The rest of the things in the teaching job application will remain the same as per situation no 2.
Now, let us understand the structure of an application for a teaching job.
Format for teaching job application
Your application for a teaching job must include the following elements.
Element 1: Reference
Always mention the source of your application. Your application source can be a response to an advertisement or someone’s reference that we discussed earlier.
If you forget to mention the reference, no one will entertain your application, and you will lose your candidature for the said position.
Element 2: Salutation
Salutation is important. Always check if the advertiser has given the name of any person to write an application to or not.
The best way to determine the salutation is to use the exact name or the post of the application receiver mentioned in the advertisement.
Be cautious while addressing a woman whose marital status is unknown. In that case, use “Ms.” As a salutation.
For example, Dear Ms Gupta, Dear Mrs Sharma
The use of a surname is better than using the first name. However, you can use suffixes like “sir” or “madam” if you wish.
If you don’t find any application recipient, assume it is from the Principal and use salutation accordingly.
Element 3: First paragraph or opening paragraph
The opening paragraph should contain who you are and the reason why you are the perfect fit for the position.
It should be crisp and short.
Please do not make it longer than 3 to 4 lines.
Make it attractive and impressive. You should mention your experience or qualifications and the best reason for your suitability for the teaching job.
Let me give you two examples.
Example 1: That most teachers do this by copy-paste from the internet.
I am applying for the teaching post as per the advertisement. I have done my master’s from XYZ University in XYZ year. I am a hard-working teacher and have been teaching students in a coaching class for the last five years. My skills and experience will be helpful for me to teach in your school.
Example 2:
After getting my masters in commerce, I joined as a senior teacher for a coaching class with around 100+ students. I have achieved an average result of 76% for all of my students in the last three years. I want to replicate the same for your school. Below are some of the statistics (insights) of the milestones.
Which paragraph is more impressive, according to you?
I hope you got my point.
Element 4: The main content or middle paragraph
The second or middle paragraph is to showcase your credentials, achievements, and skills and gives more thrust on meeting the criteria of the teaching job.
You should mention one good thing that you like about the school that you are applying for. This is only possible when you research well about the school.
You can gather information from the school websites, online reviews, last year’s results, events etc.
Why should you mention these things?
Because it indicates that you are well-updated and know about the school. The good thing you will mention in one line will separate you from other candidates, and the application receiver will surely be impressed.
Never miss researching the school and its achievement or any uniqueness.
Element 5: Closing paragraph
The closing paragraph is about thanking in anticipation of the next action. What could be the next action?
The interview call.
You can politely ask for an interview, and I am damn sure that if you meet the teaching job criteria and apply all these learning, you have a high chance of getting an interview call.
You can mention your preparedness for the interview at their convenient time but always mention your preferable date and time slot if you are already engaged in some other job like private teaching or coaching class teacher.
It looks good and leaves the impression of professionalism.
Element 6: Thanking and information about attachments or enclosures
You are now at the end of your teaching application and should close it with thanks. You can write like,
“Yours Sincerely,
Shweta Singh”
Mention the date and sign. ( If you are sending the application in printed form.)
These small things have more significant advantages.
Just after that, leave some space and mention:
“Resume is attached, or please refer to the attached bio-data.”
And that’s it.
You are done with the impressive, professional yet simple application for a teaching job.
Now I know that you still have questions like,
- How do I write a simple application letter for a teaching job?
- How can I write an application for teaching?
- How do I write an application letter for a teaching job with no experience?
Maybe you are waiting for the sample application letter for teaching job or the Format for teaching job application. Right?

I have created some sample application for teaching job in English, but soon I will also add a sample application for teaching job in Hindi.

Stay prepared for an interview with my tested strategies to secure your job
FAQs on teaching application writing
Should you include salary details in the job application for the teaching post?
The answer is NO unless it is specifically asked.
Suppose you mention the expected salary, for example, 25000/month. If the school or coaching institute has a lower pay scale, your application will be ignored, and you will lose the interview call that you could have negotiated according to your ability and skills.
And, If the pay scale is already higher than what you have mentioned, you will get a low salary if hired.
Got my point?
What should I mention if the school or recruiter asks explicitly for the salary details?
Always mention your actual current salary and give them a range of the expected salary.
For example, if your current salary package is 6.5 lacs/annum, you can mention that you are comfortable with the range of 8 to 10 lacs/annum.
Never mention specific figures.
How to follow up after teaching job application?
If you don’t hear from the school after a few days or seven days from the last date of an application, you can email or call the school and inquire about your application status politely.
