As I said, to attract students for your tuition, you have to think beyond the advertisement. I started home tuition with five students a few years back, and today, I am the owner of a coaching class with more than 160 students and 10+ teaching staff.
It just took me 1.5 years to reach 40 students.
But, I haven’t got all students from advertising only. I use strategies that worked for me and definitely work for you.
I have compiled the best strategies to attract students, and I hope you will find them helpful.
How To Attract Students For Tuition ( Home Tuition, Tuition Classes, or Coaching Classes )
Guest lecture
I am not talking about the demo class that you offer in your advertisement. I am talking about the guest lecture in schools near you.
Confused?
Let me explain in brief.
You have to visit schools that are near to you and offer them a guest lecture on a specific topic. Please note that you are not going to advertise your tutoring services.
This guest lecture will not be about any subjects. It can be about the latest trends in the education sector, new courses, learning or teaching techniques, innovative learning skills, etc.
Do your research before choosing any topic and prepare yourself to face questions if someone asks during or after the lecture.
You might be thinking about how to attract students for coaching classes with this strategy.
Here is the trick.
Once you are done with your topic, include one short demo class on a specific topic and teach the students.
Please remember that the topic must be age-appropriate and relevant to the students. For example, guest lecture topics with primary students will differ from secondary or higher secondary students.
This short demo class will be an attraction for students. Select a complicated topic and make it easy for the students.
You should request the school to invite the parents also wherever possible.
Your guest lecture should not be more than 60 minutes, and out of 60 minutes, your short demo class must not exceed 20 minutes.
I know it is tough to apply this strategy, but if you do, you will surely get students for your tuition quickly.
Notes: Only use this strategy when you have some specialization or certifications in teaching. General teaching will not work for this strategy.
Prepare one PowerPoint presentation in advance, convert it into a PDF, and share it with the students.
Your presentation will have the same content that you include in your lecture. But, at the end of the presentation, the trick is to mention your mobile number and a short bio so that students can call you if they are interested in learning more from you.
Try to be unique with your short demo class during the guest lecture. And, never ask for tutoring services unless asked by any student or parents.
Showcase expertise on social media
I am not talking about posting on social media. Posting content on social media is ok but creating valuable and authoritative content is what you should do.
Create profiles on popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Now, make a compelling profile description that includes your qualifications, achievements, experience, etc.
Why am I asking you to do this?
Because students and parents will always check out your social media profile before they connect with you, and if your social media profile is highly professional, they will trust you quickly.
Remember, as a tutor, your social media profile and content must not like a person who shares funny videos or love quotes.
Focus on creating valuable and engaging content on social media. Daily posting on social media is NOT considered a good thing. If you do this, students will believe you have plenty of time to spend on social media.
Also, if you already have a social presence on social media, please delete all irrelevant posts and create informative posts that reflect your personality as a tutor.
If you keep your social media profiles neat, clean and professional. It will help you to win the trust of students or parents easily.
Build authority on professional platforms
LinkedIn is the best platform to showcase your skills and establish your expertise. However, LinkedIn is not a social media platform.
Try to connect with people nearby your area; once you have more connections, more people will know about you and ask for your services.
Keep a consistent flow of posts on LinkedIn and try to create content that helps parents or students. After every 10-15 posts, you can promote yourself. Please do not promote yourself with every post.
Present yourself in local events
Local events will help you to get noticed by students. There are two options to do this.
The first option is to sponsor the event in school.
Don’t think that it will cost you much. You can have a small awareness session on related topics and invite students and parents; it won’t cost you money unless the school asks for compensation.
The second option is to become a volunteer in local events.
Many schools are regularly organizing events. You have to get the information on such events and try to take part as a volunteer.
Not only in schools, but you can also promote yourself in any local events requiring volunteers. Keep a visiting card ready when you are at local events.
Networking with local people
Letting people know about your services is a great thing. You should always try to connect with the local authority, government campaigns, local clubs, local news agencies, librarians, etc.
When you connect with more people, you are expanding your reach further. Networking doesn’t mean promoting yourself but letting people know about you.
If 100 people know about you and connect with you, you will be the first reference whenever they find any student or parent looking for tuition.
Collaborate with retired teachers or school teachers
Many retired teachers never opt for tuition, even if they are good teachers. Try to find such teachers and ask them if they can refer you.
You can offer a small compensation or commission for every student they refer to your tuition. This way, they will get a passive income, and you will get students.
You can also reach out to the school teachers and offer some incentives as a referral. But make sure to build a relationship first.
Create a win-win situation when you reach out to retired teachers of nearby schools but ensure they don’t become your competitors.
Use referral incentives
This strategy is quite interesting and useful if done cleverly.
You can ask your existing students if they refer new students to your tuition. In return, you can offer some discount on their tuition fees.
For example, if your existing student refers a new student and that student joins your tuition, you can give a discount on fees to your existing students. ( Something like 11-month fees instead of 12-month fees).
I used this method in my initial days, and it worked fine.
But, don’t force students to do this.
Get your website & write a blog
In this digital world, you are missing many things if you don’t have a website. Setting up a website is very easy and cheap too.
All you need is the domain and hosting. If you don’t know anything about website creation, you can comment in the comment box, and I will guide you on that.
Benefits of websites for tutors:
Just like you are reading this informative article on “how to attract students for tuition” you can write detailed and informative articles to attract people searching for tuition services.
Such articles are also known as blog posts. You are now reading a “blog post” or “Article”.
If you have a website, you will have more opportunities to attract students for tuition by showcasing your expertise through articles, videos, images, emails etc.
Blog posts are one of the best ways to convince and attract students by writing useful tips, exam solutions, test papers, etc.
Video tutorials
Everyone loves videos, and YouTube is the best and most free platform to attract students for tuition.
Creating a YouTube channel is very easy. You can create and upload a few videos on your channel. But make sure to mention your location in the video titles.
It will help you to get viewers near your location.
You can shoot videos from your Smartphone if you can’t afford the budget for a camera, mike, and other setups. Use any good Smartphone and record tutorials with a clear voice.
There is no need to show your face in front of a camera as you can create videos without a face, but I highly recommend you show your face.
Showing face in the video is important to gain trust, and viewers will notice your confidence.
Try to shoot videos many times, and upload them on YouTube when you get the perfect one. You can learn how to do it on YouTube by searching for how to create videos and upload them on YouTube.
Create online community
The easiest way to create an online community is a Facebook page. It is absolutely FREE.
Create a Facebook page for your tuition, ask your students to follow, and invite other students. But, again, never force any student to do this.
Be clever and tell students to follow your Facebook page for some extra tips, and they will follow you. You can then start posting educational tips on your Facebook page and create more engagement with your students.
Over a period of time, you will have many followers if you provide valuable content to your followers.
If you want to know more about promoting your home tuition on Facebook for FREE, you can refer to my article on how to promote home tuition on Facebook and learn in detail.
The trick here is that when you see many followers on your Facebook page who are not your tuition students, you can post something that will share some secret exam tips for your tuition.
This way, you can create curiosity and attract students for tuition.
You can also create a Facebook group of all followers and give them a platform to discuss. However, make rules for your group and always keep the post-approval ON.
Conclusion on how to attract students for tuition classes
All the strategies are tested, and I have used them many times. There are lots of other methods that you can use with your instincts.

Advertising for tuition classes is also equally important, but the major difference is that in the advertisement, you are selling your services directly, whereas, in the above strategies, you are creating attraction.

R.Mam, I am 50 years old, more than 30 years experienced GOLD MEDALIST UNIVERSITY TOPPER Mathematics tutor. But I have never succeeded in teaching more than 2-3 students on the average and I have no student at present. Am I so unlucky? May you please reply?
Dear Sir, first accept my sincere regards. In this fast paced world, if you do not market yourself properly, no one will ever recognize you. You might have the same case. Irrespective of how knowledgeable a person is, if he or she lacks in promoting himself or herself at appropriate platforms, the failure will always welcome them. That is a harsh reality. You are not unlucky but you haven’t applied latest strategies to promote yourself. I would be more than happy to help if you are still willing to get students.
Best,
Shweta
